Eczema 101
What causes eczema?

External causes include contact with poison ivy or product ingredients and is called contact dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is when there is a genetic  mutation in a critical protein (filaggrin) in the skin that weakens the  barrier. Some children may outgrow their eczema as adults but in others  it is chronic. Atopic dermatitis and Psoriasis are two different inflammatory skin conditions that are caused by a revved up immune system.

Since the specific markers in the body that drive these two conditions are different, there are different treatments for these two conditions. Seborrheic dermatitis is another inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the scalp, ears, face and chest.  It is best treated with topical therapies and is thought to be triggered by an individual response to yeast overgrowth of the skin.  Skinsage doctors use an integrative approach to manage eczema in all its forms by incorporating lifestyle, diet and supplements to treatment plan in addition to being experts in the use of prescription options.

How to treat eczema
Integrative approach to eczema

Effective treatments for eczema, psoriasis, and seborrhea, include prescription topicals like steroids, tacrolimus, pimecrolimus, calcipotriene, and antifungals. Oral treatments offer relief for psoriasis sufferers. Natural topical remedies like coconut oil and B12 cream offer anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial benefits. Nutritional supplements and dietary changes, including L-histidine, hemp seed oil, increased fiber intake, and specific probiotic strains, improve the skin barrier and help patients with eczema.

Oral quercetin can alleviate itch, while topical indigo, vitamin D, and vitamin A can modulate psoriasis. Prescription antifungal products offer benefits for seborrheic  dermatitis along with neem and tea tree oil. Oral neem and curcumin have proven effective for seborrhea and psoriasis.

Skinsage doctors are highly experienced in the use of newer systemic agents to treat conditions such as eczema and psoriasis in patients with moderate to severe cases or resistant disease. Apremilast (Otezla) and Deucravacitinib (Sotyktu) are two newer oral agents that are very effective in the treatment of psoriasis with low side effect profiles and high safety data.  An every other week injectable Dupilumab (Dupixent) is also a safe and effective option for the treatment of eczema.

Light treatment is a longstanding treatment option for both eczema and psoriasis.  We work closely with light device companies who can help our patients obtain at home devices to treat themselves conveniently and consistently.

A Skinsage consultation is an ideal way to manage chronic and persistent skin conditions by having an experienced doctor by your side every step of the way.
